Strategic Planning Director


Strategic Planning is at the heart of Mastercard’s programme management framework. Acting as the compass for our programmes, the Strategic Planning Director partners with key stakeholders across Product & Engineering, Customer & Market Delivery, Operations & Technology and Commercial teams to effectively manage change and new pipeline into the Infrastructure Programmes and Portfolio through effective resource capacity and demand management.

Role primary responsibilities, leading:-

o Resource Management –

• Definition of key planning & forecasting principles through engagement with our Strategic and Technical Programme Managers across individual programmes, pulling together a joined and holistic portfolio demand resource profile for committed and forecast change across live markets, new customer solutions and pipeline opportunities to enable effective planning.

• Identification of resourcing gaps through early pipeline planning, obtaining financial approvals enabling teams to initiate timely recruitment activities.

• Prioritisation of environment build work across Operations & Technology (in ALM / Jira) working in partnership with the Strategic and Technical Programme Managers to deliver against internal and external contractual commitments required to support our Hub and software sale deliveries.

o Demand management –

• Portfolio demand in-take process for new Product roadmap items, existing live market changes and new regional opportunities with a 50%+ win probability, using pre-defined estimations and resource models in line with agreed governance.

o Change Management –

• Resource co-ordination, prioritisation & risk mitigation discussions and decisions with Product &Engineering programme co-founders and Operations & Technology stakeholders in relation to change, ensuring minimised programme and portfolio impacts across all Product & Engineering pillars for live markets, customer solutions and core product developments.

o Performance Management -

• Performance reviews with Product & Engineering SMEs in relation to resource capacity, utilisation and optimisation to achieve optimum velocity & quality.

• Creation of trend analysis dashboards driving thought leadership for ongoing improvements and efficiency with multiple lenses across eg. Infrastructure / Customer Deliver Programme(s), Functional / Department / Skills etc. against pre-defined metrics.

o Stakeholder management –

• Product, Engineering and Commercial discussions providing thought leadership and recommendations on earliest start dates for unplanned work based on the current committed portfolio of deliveries and associated resource plans, driving early insight around do-ability for pre-contract discussions.

o Risk & issue management –

• Development and maintenance of a Portfolio aligned recruitment dashboard enabling early transparency of status, risks/issues and associated mitigation recommendations.

• Inputs into Sales stage gate approvals and risk assessment processes enabling early transparency on the Infrastructure Portfolio resourcing capacity and demand position, associated risks and required mitigation.

o Forecasting –

• Scenario planning for the Infrastructure Programme future pipeline driving earlier strategic planning conversations and decisions enabling timely resourcing and recruitment strategies (medium to long term horizon) essential at a time of significant portfolio growth and change to remove horizon capacity constraints.

• Provision of Capacity & Demand insights into the Product and Financial teams informing Monthly, Quarterly and Yearly forecasts.

• Technology resource forecast and actuals tracking in partnership with Product portfolio reporting team(s) & Finance, feeding back into the Strategic Planning Managers and SME teams enabling continuous improvement and estimate realignment based on factual evidence.

This is done by:

• Supporting Programme Co-Founders to align capacity to the right things, managing demand through a standard intake and Product & Engineering governance process.

• Bring order where there is chaos through prioritisation, financial management and strategic planning in partnership Product & Engineering and Operations & Technology SMEs.

• Embedding Capacity & Demand as an essential part of the broader Product & Engineering strategic and operational governance model.

• Telling a data driven narrative, presenting analysis of factual baselined data and turning data into focused management information.

• Building strong stakeholder relationships and acting as lead and primary interface between our commercial, product and engineering team(s) for planning new pipeline demand and material change coming into the portfolio for capacity impact assessment enabling key commercial discussions and decisions to be progressed (Product, Customer, Pre-Sales, Post-Sales).

• Understanding market / regional problems, customer pain points & product strategy enabling key focus during capacity and demand forecasting on the WHY & WHAT.

• Leading review sessions with technical SMEs to drive the HOW and WHO and associated deliverables for medium-long term horizon outcomes - taking inputs from solution, strategic planning estimated resource effort and indicative target delivery forecasts in partnership with Live market, new customer solution and pipeline opportunity teams.

• Providing ongoing SME input and support to the development of governance, processes and lifecycles for our products and services.

• Working with business partners to align and prioritize business and technology capacity against customer, product and technology roadmaps.

• Line Management of between 1-3 staff

All About You

• Strong technical and project / portfolio management experience.

• Experience in portfolio level resource capacity and demand management.

• The ability to thrive in fast-paced environments while being flexible and able to handle rapidly changing scenarios; someone who sees ‘ambiguity’ as an opportunity rather than a hurdle.

• High-energy, detail oriented and proactive with the ability to function under pressure in an independent environment.

• Strong knowledge and experience in payments with a focus on Commercial market and technologies.

• Strong business leadership, technology acumen, and an ability to influence at all levels.

• High degree of independent leadership, critical thinking, communication, accountability, analytical and teamwork skills.

• Strong Relationship, Collaboration & Organisation skills.

• Experience in bringing new capabilities to market, improving operations, and driving change management.

• Expertise in the areas of strategy, planning and financial management

• Stakeholder Management – Operations, Technology, Product & Delivery (all levels).

• Experience in areas of ALM, Jira, Aha and Domo reporting preferred.

• Strong Excel experience and skills essential.

• Portfolio Level Planning, Risk / Issue Management experience

• Demonstration of Mastercard Core Competencies and ways of working.
