Director, Privacy Engineer

• The Privacy Engineer will drive the organization to excellence on privacy preserving technological safeguards and take responsibility in ensuring compliance with data protection laws and other laws relating to data, including in particular requirements pertaining to personal data transfers under the EU General Data Protection Regulation (“GDPR”) and related regulatory guidance.

• The Privacy Engineer ensures that thorough privacy engineering review is carried out in the context of personal data transfers and is responsible for identifying and implementing privacy requirements to enhance Mastercard security and access controls in partnership with Mastercard’s Operations and Technology teams.

• The Privacy Engineer will also develop and support processes and procedures to facilitate internal transfers of data in compliance with privacy by design safeguards.

• The position requires a strong understanding of the complex data and privacy landscape and ability to develop creative solutions to ensure compliance with privacy and data protection laws globally. In addition, the Privacy Engineer must have an affinity for and good understanding of individuals’ data privacy rights and expectations, while having a process-driven attitude and ability to communicate with stakeholders globally.

• The position will report to the Senior Managing Counsel and will be a member of the Global Privacy & Data Protection team.

• The ideal candidate will have the ability to think and act strategically with respect to the needs of business clients and their objectives.


• Conduct the technical review of Mastercard processes and products when personal data transfers are involved, including advising on privacy implications of various encryption techniques, access controls and use of cloud infrastructure.

• Engage with technical and business teams on privacy engineering review to ensure that privacy requirements pertaining to data transfers are carried out throughout Mastercard’s technology and product life cycle.

• Partner with the privacy attorneys, technology and business teams to establish appropriate legal and technical safeguards to foster privacy compliance across the company, including in Mastercard recent acquisitions.

• Develop and organize technical and engineering information to help demonstrate compliance with with Mastercard’s Privacy by Design process and Binding Corporate Rules, anticipating questions from various stakeholders internally and externally.

• Assist the privacy attorneys and Operations and Technoloy teams with ensuring the integrity of Mastercard technology environments from a legal perspective, including reviewing data flows and recommending privacy controls to secure transfers of data.

• Evaluate market and privacy technology trends and evolutions and research privacy-enhancing technologies and assist Mastercard Operations and Technology teams with the validation of technology controls.

• Educate privacy attorneys, business teams, and technical teams on advanced privacy engineering requirements and develop and create guidelines to streamline Privacy by Design and other processes.

• Collaborate with privacy attorneys to select appropriate data processing terms in agreements.

All About You

• Strong command of technology, software, analytics, and/or engineering, including software development, e.g. technical use, administration, development, design, and architecture of IT technology, data management, and data integration processes.

• Degree in computer science, engineering, mathematics, or related field preferred.

• Experience advising on technology infrastructure and building products and services with an existing, sample portfolio of written product summaries, detailed data flows, and/or similar documents.

• Demonstrated interest in privacy and/or corporate security (completion of IAPP courses, CIPM/CIPT/CISSP certifications

• Familiarity with the GDPR and privacy principles that are common across global laws and regulations.

• Familiarity with Privacy by Design methodologies.

• Strong writing skills and ability to simplify technical material for other audiences, including business teams, legal departments, regulators, etc.

• Deep understanding of Mastercard products and services, or financial services in general.

Westchester County Salary Range: $158,000 - $244,000
