Director Product & Innovation

The Director Product and Innovation, reporting directly to the Country Manager will have overall end-to-end responsibility for the Italian electronic commerce and mobile commerce, Transit, Chip, Mastercard Send, P2P strategies and prepaid, debit and credit strategy and go-to-market plans from inception to execution. He/she will be driving the Product and Innovation strategies for Italy.

The incumbent will work very closely with country management and business development, and be responsible to provide leadership throughout Mastercard in understanding the Italian market, consumer, merchant, issuer and acquirer value drivers, third party participants and capabilities, competitive activities and forces, and any opportunities and threats to MasterCard for ecommerce, mobileTransit, Chip, Mastercard send, P2P and traditional products. The position is also responsible for aligning solutions across channels into a consistent and superior value proposition for consumers and merchants that can address Mastercard and its customers’ needs.

Major Accountabilities

• Local leader responsible for managing the Italian strategy, including the development of new products and payment propositions:

o Be an integral part to the development of the European and Global product strategies and global priorities

o Lead the development and execution of the Italian strategy aligned with the European Payments strategies

o Oversee the product development pipeline to ensure delivery of key priorities in alignment with regional priorities.

o Manage cross-functional relationships with the Italian management team and other key local stakeholders, including Business Development, Expert Sales, Customer Relations, Marketing, Merchant Relations and MTO

o In particular, lead the development and implementation of successful Emerging Payments propositions for MasterCard products, with primary focus in Italy, but globally coherent

• Responsible for managing existing product propositions, and launching and ensuring delivery of new product initiatives in Italy:

o Be integral part to the planning process of the WE Division

o Oversee the successful delivery and launch of all global initiatives

o Develop business plans and product commercialization strategy in consultation with regional management, expert sales, commerce development, marketing, relationship managers, customers and third parties

o Mastercard Europe overall share of e- payments, mobile, P2P,…and rate of growth

• Collaborate advantageously with major Payments companies present in Italy to expand Mastercard participation in the end-to-end value chain and capture a greater share of the value created.

Role Responsibilities

Leadership & Strategy:

• Build the strategic framework and manage cross-functional relationships across MasterCard to ensure successful development, rollout, management and growth of digital Payments‘ channels in Europe

• Coordinate product strategy with leadership team including: Global team, European team, Italian management team and the European management team

• Lead the development of strategic business plans for P&I Payments’ products, in consultation with product sales, relationship managers, customers and third parties, including analysis of revenue opportunities and related costs

• Identify, evaluate, and develop prospects for new business opportunities, partnerships or alliances in Italy and lead incubation efforts for significant new business opportunities, managing the evaluation of strategic and financial fit

• Promote the P&I products internally so as to be top of mind with the critical stakeholders, including Product Sales, Customer Relations, Marketing and MTO.

• Liaise with issuers, acquirers, and the online vendors, service providers, and merchant community and engage them as required

• Develop go to market plan for product, feature functionality by coordinating cross-functional teams

• Ensure development of adequate product, feature, functionality education and training


• Understand economics of MasterCard business strategy


• Demonstrate deep understanding of product development lifecycle and product management principles

• Align core products and digital Payments business development efforts across major cross-functional initiatives; provide day-to-day management and guidance to joint strategic product development projects

• Support sales and Product Execution teams

Profile & Requirements

Candidate profile:

• large mental bandwidth, allowing to develop strategy for novel services and operating models across a diverse environment

• Creative and visionary with superior problem solving skills to set strategy and direction

• Strong leadership; able to manage and motivate teams; ability to influence people and priorities

• Needs to be a self starter, operating independently

Professional experience:

• Extended experience in banking and payments; particularly strong working knowledge and understanding of Emerging Payments business. Intimate understanding of how Emerging Payments can be leveraged beyond the pure payment to provide enhanced value in adjacent areas. Sound commercial experience and proven ability to deal with major service providers and vendors

• Relevant experience in product management and new product development in payment industry, with proven track record to bring new products and innovations to market. Experience and knowledge of MasterCard’s organization, including deep understanding of processes, systems, technology and people is a strong plus.


• University degree; undergraduate degree in engineering is a plus

• MBA strongly preferred

• English fluency is required. At least one other European language a strong plus
