Position Overview

Technology Foundations is a team of creators who are passionate about making the Data & Services organization an outstanding place to be a software engineer. We love creating the tools, application frameworks, and services that empower the organization to build and deploy modern, data-driven applications all over the world. We partner closely with market-facing engineering teams to help them take maximum advantage of this technology platform and evolve it to meet their needs and the needs of their customers.

We are looking for a Director of Software Engineering to lead our Core Platform engineering team, designing, building and running the frameworks and services that make up the foundational capabilities of our technology platform. This role will also work closely with the SVP of D&S Technology Foundations (DSTF) and the DSTF Leadership Team guide our technology platform's evolution as it grows to support the rapidly expanding D&S business. The ideal candidate is a creative and resourceful technology leader with proven ability to build, motivate, and professionally develop high performing teams of talented software engineers. Even better if they've got experience building common, high-performance, and easy-to-use developer frameworks and/or solutions to cross-cutting concerns.

Position Responsibilities:

  • Partner closely with product management and tech leads to define the long and short term roadmaps and measurable objectives for the Core Platform sub program

  • Establish the efficient and effective operating and organizing model needed to deliver the Core Platform sub program's objectives; build and lead multiple high performance, highly cohesive engineering teams

  • Talent leadership: coach team members to their maximum potential by providing objective and actionable career guidance and opportunities; identify talent gaps; recruit and retain high quality technology talent to fill them

  • Own the Core Platform "business", including stakeholder management, risk identification and mitigation, budget management / forecasting, and hiring; establish strong, trust-based relationships with all supporting functional areas

  • Build morale, celebrate wins, learn from misses

  • Actively contribute to the ongoing evolution of the D&S Technology Foundations program - best practices, mission, objectives, operating efficiency; a highly valued thought partner for all DSTF leadership

Ideal Candidate Qualifications:

  • Passion for technology and the people who build it; the ideal candidate intuitively understands what it means to have an excellent developer experience

Proven ability to build and motivate high performance software engineering teams

  • An excellent engineering people leader who leads by example with a strong focus on coaching and mentoring; you turn good talent into great talent

Skill in both managing managers and experienced individual technical contributors

  • The foundation of technical skills needed to earn the trust and respect of highly skilled engineers (we are very heavy in .NET and TypeScript, but experience in these specific platforms is not required; we're looking for candidates who are always learning and can help their teams design robust systems, write high quality code)

  • Skilled at the business side of technology (e.g. managing to a budget, organizational design, recruiting, and partnering with supporting lines of business - finance, HR, legal, other groups - as necessary)

  • Outcome driven; comfortable setting measurable, data driven objectives and holding teams accountable

  • Demonstrated success in being a proactive change agent, with a vision to transform internal systems and operations as needed to fully support our business

  • Confident and effective communicator able to work closely with cross-functional teams and collaborate with all members of the organization to define and achieve holistic business and technical objectives

  • Positive attitude, open-minded, great listener, with an inclusive style that encourages all viewpoints
